How Septic Systems Work
  • Household wastewater flows into a holding tank ( known as a septic tank ) that traps settled solids and floating scum.In the septic tank wastes are decomposed anaerobically ( without air) by naturally occuring bacteria . the liquid portion of the wasterwater flows into a disposal field where it gets purified aerobically as it filters through the soil. Wastes are always accumulating in the septic tank, because sewage is added faster than it can decompose. For this reason, it is important to have your septic tank pumped to remove solids at least every three (3) years. The waste removed is taken to a wastewater treatment plant for processing . *
